Breaking down technical SEO.

Technical SEO can be broken down into four key interwoven areas:

Crawling
A web crawler (or spider or search engine bot) indexes website content from all over the internet. The job of the crawler is to get an understanding of the content / subject of your website. This helps website visitors find your products / services via search engines.

Indexing
This goes hand-in-hand with crawling, whereby once the crawler has an understanding of your website content / subject, your site will then be indexed on the search engines accordingly. As an example, if someone searches for ‘Car servicing’, the user would want to be shown a selection of companies websites that specialise in servicing cars.

Rendering
Websites are created using code, mostly HTML, CSS and Javascript. When someone visits your website, this code ‘renders’ the pages into something visual via the web browser. The cleaner and leaner the code, the faster your website will load. All major search engines consider fast rendering time on mobile devices of particular importance.

Website architecture
As well as rendering considerations, your website needs to be easy to read and steer your way through. The web crawler also needs easy reading, so it’s important to ensure the site is correctly structured. This includes tagging main titles, subsection titles, paragraph text, etc. Correct image formats and files sizes are also important in website architecture, helping the site to render as quickly as possible.

These areas form the key foundations when creating your website.
